A senior Taliban official said the Taliban had “made history”, following the completion of the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
“We are making history again. The 20 -year occupation of Afghanistan by the United States and NATO ends tonight,” Anas Haqqani, a senior Taliban official, said in a tweet on Twitter as reported by the news agency. AFP, Tuesday (31/8/2021).
“I am very happy that after 20 years of jihad, sacrifice and hardship, I have the pride to see this historic moment,” he added.
Haqqani also urged Taliban fighters to stop the festive firing to ensure no civilians were injured.
The sounds of celebratory gunfire were heard from several Taliban checkpoints in Kabul, the Afghan capital after the Pentagon and Taliban separately confirmed the last US troops had left Afghanistan. This ended the country’s 20-year war.
Taliban also declared full independence of Afghanistan after US forces lifted their legs.
“Tonight at 12.00 Afghanistan time, the remaining American troops left Kabul airport and our country gained complete independence,” said the Taliban’s chief spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid.
“Praise be to Allah,” he said.
