US Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, Wally Adeyemo, said in a statement to Agence France-Presse on Tuesday that he is seeking to form an “international coalition” to combat the “financing network” of the Hamas movement.
Adeyemo said, “I will go to Europe starting Friday, and I will meet with our allies and partners and talk about what we can do in a coordinated manner to confront the Hamas financing network.”
He added, “Our goal is to build an alliance with countries in the region but also around the world to combat its financing.”
Adeyemo explained that over the past few years, the United States “imposed a number of sanctions on Hamas,” which “like any other party, has devised means and tried to find ways to circumvent our sanctions,” including through cryptocurrencies.
On Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron suggested that an international “coalition” would undertake, not only financially but also on a broader scale, the “fight” against the Palestinian movement.
According to those close to Macron, this means creating a new coalition, or expanding the coalition that has been in place since 2014 to combat ISIS in Syria and Iraq to include the fight against Hamas.
Without commenting on the French President’s statements, Adeyemo stressed that “the strategy that was used to confront ISIS and other terrorist groups is the strategy that we must use.”
He stressed, “Our goal must be to use all the tools at our disposal to deprive them of access to these funds in order to make it difficult for them to continue their activities that could destabilize the region and the world.”
The Assistant Secretary of the Treasury indicated that additional economic sanctions should be imposed, and “some” other “tools” should be used against Hamas.
