US to release new nuclear warheads amidst Russian threats

This is happening against the backdrop of threats coming from the Russian president. As part of the planned program, the US will produce 80 plutonium cores each year, a key component of strategic and tactical warheads and bombs.

Production of these cores ceased in the US in 1989, shortly before the US and *Russia signed the first Strategic Arms Treaty and agreed to reduce nuclear arsenals. In addition, the US plans to extend the life of B61-12 nuclear bombs stationed in Europe and upgrade the warheads of Trident II intercontinental ballistic missiles stationed on submarines.

A few months ago, the US Accountability Office announced the US government’s use of laboratories at Los Alamos (where Robert Oppenheimer built the atomic bomb in the 1940s) and Santa River for development and production. On the other hand, the Russian president announced the suspension of Russia’s participation in the Strategic Offensive and Limitation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty (START), the latest bilateral agreement with the United States.

In Kaliningrad, before the start of the war, exercises were repeatedly conducted under conditions simulating a tactical nuclear strike against European countries. President Putin speaks ambiguously on this topic, while former President Medvedev does it quite frankly on his Telegram channel, which sometimes raises doubts about the adequacy of his reaction.
