It wouldn’t be the first time the US has made such a vaccine purchase. The country already bought 500 million doses in June intended for Covax, an international initiative to ensure that less wealthy countries also have access to corona vaccines. It is unclear how many vaccines will be purchased this time.
There is currently also a discussion in the US about whether fully vaccinated Americans should receive an extra corona shot. An advisory committee of drug watchdog FDA will meet on Friday to discuss the issue. Critics believe that extra doses needed for this should be given to countries that are behind in vaccination.
