The referendum or vote takes place in four regions Ukraine which is now controlled by Moscow. This referendum is seen as a move by Russia to conquer these areas in Ukraine.
The referendum took place in Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Kherson. The referendum started last Friday (23/9) until next Tuesday (27/9).
While the Ukrainian authorities and other Western countries have condemned this referendum. They believe the referendum results can later be used as an excuse from Russia if the Ukrainian forces wanted to return the territory, it would be as if the attempt were an attack on Russia.

Meanwhile, the vote contained a question to ask residents of the four regions if they wanted their territories to become part of the Russian Federation. However, the results are expected to follow Moscow’s wishes.
With this plan, of course, the seven-month war will only intensify. The referendum comes before President Vladimir Putin orders a partial military mobilization, which means he could deploy another 300,000 Russian troops to fight in Ukraine.
The accusations of Russia
According to officials appointed by Russia in the four regions of Ukraine, the referendum was conducted for security reasons. During the first four days, local officials will take ballot papers to people’s homes and set up polling stations near local residential buildings.
The vote also took place in Russia. Meanwhile, the pro-Russian separatist in Donestsk, Denis Pushilin, called this referendum a milestone.
Threat of the United States
The president of the United States (United States) warned Russia that there would be swift and serious consequences if Moscow used the referendum to conquer four regions of Ukraine. Biden called the referendum a farce.
“The Russian referendum is a fake, a false pretext for trying to annex parts of Ukraine by force in a flagrant violation of international law,” Biden said in a statement.
“We will work with our allies and partners to inflict rapid and severe economic loss on Russia,” he said.
