Plans for invasion?
The US intelligence services suspect Russia plans to invade Ukraine early next year with possibly 175,000 troops. At the moment, about 70,000 to 100,000 Russian soldiers are said to be stationed near the border with Ukraine.
According to Russia, Ukraine is the culprit in the conflict. The Kremlin accuses Kiev of stationing some 120,000 military personnel near the self-declared people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.
Relations between Russia and Ukraine have been very bad since the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014. The Ukrainian army has since been embroiled in military conflict with pro-Russian separatists around Donetsk and Lugansk. In total, more than 13,000 were killed.
