Correspondent Marieke de Vries:
The pleadings were held in the Supreme Court in Washington this afternoon. Protesters had gathered outside. There were pros and cons. I saw horrific photos of fetuses belonging to anti-abortion protesters, but there were also people who believe that women should be allowed to decide for themselves.
If the Supreme Court agrees, women’s choice will be curtailed. Other states can therefore amend the legislation. This will mainly affect women in a disadvantaged position, for example poorer women who do not have the money to go to liberal states for an abortion. Out of desperation, they will resort to illegal means. Abortion will not be banned, but will happen more in backstreets. That leads to more danger for women.”
