The United States Supreme Court this Monday annulled the ruling of the state of Colorado that prevented the participation of former President Donald Trump in the Republican Party primaries due to alleged links to “insurrection” activities.
The nine judges of the highest court made the decision on the eve of the Republican primaries set for the so-called “Super Tuesday”, which constitutes a cardinal date in the race for the presidency.
«We conclude that states can disqualify people who hold or attempt to hold state positions. But the states do not have the power, under the Constitution, to apply Section 3 with respect to federal offices, especially the Presidency,” the Supreme Court ruling states.
Although five judges supported that no state has the power to disqualify a federal candidate, the rest considered that today’s decision should be limited to the case consulted.
In this sense, other states such as Illinois and Maine have also pointed out against Trump’s participation due to his alleged involvement in the assault on the Capitol, which took place on January 6, 2021, after the current president, Joe Biden, won the elections. elections in 2020.
For his part, on his Truth Social website, the former president described the determination as “a great victory for the United States” while emerging as the main Republican proposal.
