Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
United States of America reaffirmed the White House’s support for a two-state solution to resolving the conflict Israel–Palestine.
The two-state solution is one of the peace ideas that have been supported by the international community, in which Israel and Palestine each establish an independent state and live side by side peacefully.
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, stated that the two-state solution was the only way to resolve the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian dispute.
The two-state solution, he said, provides hope for Israel-Palestine to live “with security, peace and equal dignity”.
“If there are no positive changes, and especially if we cannot find a way to help Palestinians live with more dignity and with better hope, cycles (of clashes) like this will continue to be repeated, and it is not anyone’s desire,” he said. Blinken to ABC News, Sunday (23/5).
Despite reaffirming US support for a two-state solution, Blinken cannot ensure that a settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict can take place any time soon.
Blinken emphasized that one of the most important points at this time is to provide humanitarian assistance to Palestine while starting the reconstruction of Gaza, which was ravaged by the fighting between Hamas and Israel in recent weeks.
Blinken made the statement before traveling to the Middle East to meet the Israeli and Palestinian foreign ministers as well as the foreign ministers of several other countries in the region.
Blinken made this statement shortly after President Joe Biden made a similar point.
Despite being a close ally of Israel, the US has indeed supported a two-state solution in resolving the conflict between Tel Aviv and Ramallah.
However, in the era of President Donald Trump’s administration, the US traditional attitude in responding to this complex conflict has changed. In Trump’s hands, the US even recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
The city, which is holy to three religions, is one of the main sources of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict so far. Both Israel and Palestine claim Jerusalem as their capital.
Now, Biden ensures that the direction of US policy will return to what it used to be, namely supporting a two-state solution.
“There has been no change in my commitment to Israel’s security. Period. However, something has changed. The change is that we still need a two-state solution. That is the only answer,” said Biden.
