Additional restrictions on defense-related goods and services, issued by the US Department of Commerce, have been issued and come into effect Thursday (9/12/2021).

The department said the purpose of the embargo was to ensure that defense-related items were not made available to the Cambodian military and military intelligence services without prior review by the US government.
A notice in the Federal Register, quoted AP, Friday (12/10/2021), said developments in Cambodia were “contrary to US national security and foreign policy interests.”
The latest restrictions follow a US Treasury Department order in November on sanctions against two senior Cambodian military officials for corruption and come amid growing concerns about Beijing’s influence.
At the time, the US government issued a warning warning American businesses of potential exposure to Cambodian entities and their military that they said were involved in human rights abuses, corruption, and other destabilizing behavior.
Cambodia branded the US sanctions as “politically motivated” and said it would not discuss them with Washington.
