NEW YORK (Reuters) – The U.S. stock market closed mixed on Monday, with Alphabet and Meta Inc gains, as investors held back from taking risks ahead of a new round of talks to raise the U.S. debt ceiling.
US President Joe Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy are scheduled to meet on Monday to discuss raising the federal debt ceiling, just 10 days before the United States faces an unprecedented default.
According to preliminary data, the Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose by 0.72 points, or 0.02 percent, to close at 4,192.70 points, and the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 62.61 points, or 0.50 percent, to 12,720.51 points. However, the industrial index fell 139.62 points, or 0.42 percent, to 33,287.01 points.
