US state of Mississippi takes “Confederate battle flag” from the state flag

It is striking that the state flag with the battle flag was only officially introduced in Mississippi in 1894, so very long after the Civil War. That was the period when new laws were introduced in the southern states to erode the rights of the black population. Even more: during the Civil War, that battle flag did not even appear in the former flag of the confederate state of Mississippi, but it did … a magnolia tree. Ironically, if the “Black Lives Matter” movement is now making its mark, the original symbol of “Confederate Mississippi” will return to the new flag.

Mississippi is the last of the southern states to fly the “Southern Cross”. Georgia had previously removed that symbol.
