US State Department “Restrictions on contact with Taiwan lifted” Voice of America

The U.S. State Department says it is lifting its guidelines restricting contact with Taiwanese government officials.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement on the 9th that “the United States has created complex internal regulations restricting exchanges with Taiwan to appease the communist regime in China over the years,” and will lift all restrictions imposed by itself.

He emphasized that Taiwan is “a vibrant democracy and a reliable partner for the United States.”

The Taiwanese government said, “The United States and Taiwan respect common values such as diplomacy and freedom,” and welcomed that we will exchange more frequently for mutual benefit.

The United States has restricted official exchanges with Taiwan by acknowledging the principle of “one China” that China has advocated during diplomatic relations with China in 1979.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Kraft will visit Taiwan next week to meet with senior government officials.

Donald Trump’s administration, which has been strengthening cooperation with Taiwan to keep China in check, visited Taiwan in August last year by Minister of Health and Welfare Alex Aiza for cooperation with the novel coronavirus.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its position that China is firmly opposed to any official traffic between the United States and Taiwan.
