US State Department Opposes Republican Proposal to Provide Ukraine with Non-Military Assistance as a Loan

The US State Department spoke out about proposals from Republicans in Congress to provide Ukraine with non-military assistance as a loan.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said this at a briefing, European Pravda reports.

“We do not believe that saddled Ukraine with billions of dollars in foreign debt as it tries to revive its economy – which is, after all, the best way for it to stand on its own two feet and defend itself without the help of other countries – is an appropriate step in this is the time,” Miller said.

Earlier, media reported that Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson and the heads of key Republican House committees that deal with national security issues took up developing your own package assistance to Ukraine.

The White House announced a $300 million package of military aid to Ukraine

Among the proposals under discussion is to treat some of the nonmilitary aid as a type of loan, said House Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Mike McCaul and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham.

The plan could also have a “generous repayment system” to help Ukraine, McCall said.

In turn, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham believes that the idea expressed by the likely Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to turn part of the aid to Kyiv into a loan will help unblock the House of Representatives.

Yesterday it became known that Democrats in the US House of Representatives preparing an attempt to bypass Republican Speaker Mike Johnson to force a vote on a $95 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

Previously Johnson ripped off bipartisan support package for Ukraine proposed by the Senate, but left the door open for a new bipartisan foreign aid package, with McCaul taking the lead in trying to finalize the proposal for a new project and achieve consensus among party members to pass the package before the end of March or April.

Before this, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Republican Mike Johnson, said that bill on additional financing of Ukraine will be considered as soon as the issue of federal government funding is resolved.
