US State Department is preparing to stop Nord Stream 2: new sanctions will be developed by May

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken ready to discuss new sanctions against the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline with congressmen. The State Department will present the restrictions in May, while the authorities, as before, are ready to take action to stop the “bad project”.

About this with reference to the representative of the State Department Ned Price reports the edition “Voice of America”… Anthony Blinken, Price said, will attend a meeting of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

One of the journalists who participated in the press briefing asked Price if the secretary of state was ready to answer numerous questions from congressmen about additional sanctions on Nord Stream 2. A State Department spokesman recalled that the following report listing companies and ships, helping Russia to finish laying the gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea, will be presented to Congress in May.

“President Biden called this a bad deal dividing Europe. The Secretary of State, I am sure, will have the opportunity tomorrow to continue discussing this issue with legislators. He appreciates their understanding of the issue and feedback on this and all other problems we face,” he assured Price.

Five influential Republican congressmen, following their Senate counterparts, appealed to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and the Biden administration to impose sanctions against participants in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, warning that the project “threatens to increase Europe’s energy dependence on Russia.”

The Nord Stream 2 project is estimated at 9.5 billion euros. It is being implemented by Gazprom in an alliance with European companies Engie, Uniper, OMV, Shell, Wintershall. They pledged to finance Nord Stream 2 in total by 50%, that is, by 950 million euros each. Gazprom will provide the second half of the funds – 4.75 billion euros.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the gas pipeline must be put into operation at the beginning of 2021. However, later the dates were postponed to the end of the year.

As previously reported OBOZREVATEL, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and his Polish counterpart Zbigniew Rau publicly addressed the US President Joe Biden with the request stop the construction of Nord Stream 2 using any tools.
