• Thirteen associations condemn blatant interference in the affairs of Tunisia. The signatories of the declaration “strongly condemned this method of blackmail which consists in taking advantage of the difficult economic situation of the country to exert pressure”
The policy adopted by Saïed with a view to facilitating the mission of the various American senators and representative of the Biden administration through open dialogue and sincere commitments not to transgress democracy and freedom in Tunisia can in no way give carte blanche to this friendly country from interfering in the country’s internal affairs.
Indeed, the mutual consultations about the situation in Tunisia with the Americans should not serve as an alibi to fuel the political crisis in our country; which won’t help matters.
Although Tunisia is considered by Washington “as a privileged partner which is called upon to establish a clear roadmap with a precise timetable for a rapid return to the democratic functioning of institutions and to raise the level of democracy and the rights of the man, the state of freedom of the press and individual freedoms, which figure at the top of the indicators that will determine the level of relations with Tunis for the next stage, should in no case lead the Americans to urge a party of the Tunisian people against another.
This is also the reason why the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad summoned, on Friday, the Chargé d’Affaires at the United States Embassy in Tunisia, Natasha Franceschi, to inform him of Tunisia’s indignation at the statements emanating from the United States Embassy.
The ministry considered that these statements “ unacceptable do not in any way reflect the fraternal relations uniting the two countries.
Contrary to American expectations, thirteen Tunisian associations and organizations considered that the declaration published by the American State Department, following the announcement of the preliminary results of the referendum, as well as the remarks made by the American ambassador in Tunisia, constitute interference in the internal affairs of the country and constitute an attack on national sovereignty.
These statements, they said in a statement yesterday spouse, are “contrary to the diplomatic practices of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties and International Legal Relations between States prohibiting any interference in the internal affairs of countries”.
The signatories of the declaration have firmly ” sentenced ” this method of blackmail which consists in taking advantage of the difficult economic situation of the country to exert pressure ».
A situation, according to them, caused by the debt policy adopted by successive governments since 2011.
Among the signatories of this joint declaration are the Tunisian League for Human Rights (Ltdh), the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (Snjt), the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (Ftdes) and the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women (Atfd).
