Germany’s ice hockey star Leon Draisaitl continues the race to catch up in the North American professional league NHL with the Edmonton Oilers under new coach Jay Woodcroft. The 26-year-old added two goals in the 7-3 win over the Anaheim Ducks and extended his lead in the scoring charts to 35 goals. The Oilers, third in the Pacific Division, are back in a playoff spot.

Draisaitl’s compatriots Tim Stützle, Moritz Seider and Thomas Greiss also celebrated victories. While attacker Stützle got nothing in his Ottawa Senators’ 3-1 win at the Buffalo Sabers, defender Seider contributed an assist to the Detroit Red Wings’ 3-2 win at the New York Rangers after a penalty shootout. For the ex-Mannheimer it was already the 35th scoring point in his first NHL season, making the 20-year-old by far the most successful defender among the rookies. Goalkeeper Greiss saved 37 shots.

While Detroit still has a chance at a wild card spot, Ottawa is long out of the playoff race. Just like national goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer with Seattle Kraken: The goalie saved only 22 shots in the 3: 5 at the Winnipeg Jets.

Basketball: Kleber with best of the season in Mavs win
–
National basketball player Maximilian Kleber has again improved his personal points record this NBA season and posted 20 points in the Dallas Mavericks’ win over the New Orleans Pelicans. Just two days earlier he had his best result of the season with 19 points against the Miami Heat. At 125:118 against the Pelicans, Kleber was clearly overshadowed by Mavericks star Luka Doncic, who had a strong 49 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists. The seventh win in the past ten games cemented the Texans’ playoff course and fifth place in the Western Conference.

In the top game of the Eastern Conference, the Philadelphia 76ers defeated defending champion Milwaukee Bucks 123-120. Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo fought a duel of the stars with the better result for Embiid. The 76ers’ most important player had 42 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. Antetokounmpo had 32 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.
