The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Thursday reported the Pentagon has about two dozen special operations forces working with units of Taiwan’s armed forces, while a contingent of US Marines has been training other troops on maritime tactics.
The US official, who spoke to the WSJ on condition of anonymity, said American troops had been involved in training operations for at least the past year.

Pentagon officials declined to confirm the report, although a spokesman said US-Taiwan relations remained aligned with the current threat posed by the People’s Republic of China.
“The PRC (People’s Republic of China) has stepped up efforts to intimidate and pressure Taiwan and other allied partners, including increasing military activities carried out around Taiwan, the East China Sea and the South China Sea which we believe will destabilize and increase the risk of miscalculation, US Department of Defense spokesman John Supple said in a statement FLY, Friday (8/10/2021).
“The United States has a standing interest in the peace, security, and stability of the Indo-Pacific — including in the Taiwan Strait,” he added.
“We urge Beijing to honor its commitments to a peaceful resolution of cross-Strait differences, as described in the three communiques,” he said.
Asked about the WSJ report, Taiwan’s main representative office in the US told VOA it had no comment.
