US Seriously Builds Metaverse for Space Forces

ANTRIKSA — The US space force, Space Force is very interested in creating its own metaverse, a virtual space that makes people feel like they are active in the real world. A metaverse would allow Space Force soldiers to go into space virtually as they couldn’t do in real life.

The Space Force’s chief technology and innovation officer, Lisa Costa, said: “We must capitalize on this massive investment in the immersive digital technology industry. They will develop a virtual environment for the guardians (US space soldiers).

“We can create our own version of the metaverse,” Costa said at the IT Space Force AFCEA NOVA conference, Thursday, February 10, 2022.

Metaverse is a growing buzzword in the tech world used to describe interactive 3D virtual environments. According to Costa, there is currently a lot of sensational promotion associated with the term metaverse. But on the other hand, a lot of money goes into the idea so it’s worth seeing how Space Force can put it to use.

“In the military metaverse, members can collaborate, train and carry out a number of (military) activities,” Costa said.

He noted that 86 percent of members of the US Air Force and Space Force are 18 to 34 years old. It allows them to carry themselves as skilled gamers. “How do we make use of that skill?” he said.

“A metaverse is of great interest to the Space Force because guardians typically rely on digital representations of the space domain to do their job,” said Costa.

While the US Navy goes to sea to study warfare, and the Army goes to the field for combat training. Guardians, says Costa, can’t go into space unless they become NASA astronauts.

“The only way they get a feel for their domain of operation is with a visual data display,” he said.

“The virtual reality environment will give them situational awareness and understanding so they can make decisions.”

The technologies that make up the metaverse, he said, include virtual reality and augmented reality that combines the digital and physical worlds. With it, he pointed out, Space Force guardians can digitally engineer satellites and develop new capabilities for space operations.

“And that’s kind of a vision of where we want to go next,” he said. “Train our guardians and take advantage of the investments the industry is making.”

Costa said all US military forces could benefit from the technology and the Space Force, because of its small size, could test it first. They will see if it can be scaled up for use across the US military.
