A group of US senators has asked Meta to explain Instagram’s alleged failure to prevent child sexual abuse content from being shared among child molester networks on the platform.
Lawmakers from the Senate Judiciary Committee also want to know how Instagram’s algorithms brought together users who wanted to share such content in the first place, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Lawmakers have demanded answers as to why Instagram doesn’t detect this content, and what the platform is doing to prevent these things from happening again. The senators also want to know more about the task force that Mita says it has set up to address these issues. They demanded that the company respond by July 12th.
The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month that Meta had helped connect and promote a vast network of accounts posting child sexual abuse content.
An EU official also ordered the company to quickly address the issue, warning that the company could face severe penalties if it did not.
