Thus, the resolution calls on the US president to work with NATO leaders to develop a clear, comprehensive path for Ukraine to join NATO.
In addition, the document states that the Senate considers Ukraine’s accession to NATO to be critical to preventing future wars, promoting peace and ensuring the future security of Europe and the world.
Separately, the resolution underscores the United States Senate’s support for the government and people of Ukraine in “an unprovoked war lasting more than 500 days as they continue to defend their sovereignty and fight to remain an independent, free and democratic nation.”
In turn, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called the draft resolution of the senators important news.
“Indeed, only this can reliably secure Ukraine and our entire Europe, our democracy and freedom from new Russian aggressions. The wider the NATO space, the wider the space of peace and common security,” he wrote in Twitter.
Results of the summit in Vilnius
At the summit, Ukraine did not receive clear conditions and a timetable for joining NATO. However, the member countries of the alliance agreed on a joint communiqué on Ukraine, in which they outlined a vision of what Ukraine’s path to NATO membership should be.
In particular, Ukraine will receive an invitation after the countries of the bloc agree to it, and the state fulfills certain conditions.
At the same time, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that 48 hours before the start of the summit, there was no mention of an invitation for Ukraine in the communiqué. Negotiations between the Ukrainian side and partners have changed the situation.
