US Senate Passes Interim Budget to Avert Government Shutdown, Excludes Additional Funds for Ukraine

After the US House of Representatives, the Senate also passed a 45-day interim budget on Saturday evening (local time) to prevent the so-called “government shutdown” in the United States. In the end, 88 senators voted in favor and nine against. The emergency solution provides, among other things, help in the event of natural disasters, but no additional funds for Ukraine or border security.

The decision came a few hours before the midnight deadline at which the government shutdown would have occurred. The Biden administration had previously warned that excluding further aid to Ukraine could have serious consequences for the war, but because of the agreement between Republicans and Democrats, he is expected to sign the interim budget. House Democratic leadership said in a statement Saturday evening that it now expects House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to vote on a separate aid bill for Ukraine.

“We must stand by the Ukrainian people until victory is achieved,” the statement said. It happens again and again that the US Congress, consisting of both chambers, only decides on a budget at the last minute. If no agreement is reached, the federal government authorities will largely cease their activities and only carry out those tasks that are considered essential. The last time this was the case was for over a month around the turn of the year 2018/2019 under Donald Trump, when there was a dispute over the construction of a wall on the border with Mexico.
