Members of the US Senate did not reach an agreement to allocate new funds to Ukraine and Israel and to reform the immigration system in the United States, despite months of arduous negotiations regarding it.
Under pressure from former President Donald Trump, who called for a boycott of the bill, Republican members voted against allocating new aid to Ukraine and Israel.
The Senate had to vote later on another text, the results of which were also uncertain. It is the same bill as the first, but without immigration reform.
The United States, the main military supporter of Ukraine with more than $110 billion previously approved by Congress, has been unable for months to send new funds to Kiev.
White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan announced earlier Wednesday during his visit to NATO headquarters that the United States “can and will continue” to provide military assistance to Ukraine.
Sullivan explained during a joint press conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels, “There is no alternative to the United States’ commitment to provide a level of resources that will allow Ukraine to possess artillery, air defense systems, and other capabilities that it needs.”
For his part, Stoltenberg considered that “the agreement of the US Congress to continue supporting Ukraine in the near future” is “essential.”
Stoltenberg added that supporting Ukraine “is not an act of charity, but is related to our security,” adding that “a Russian victory will weaken us and will encourage not only Moscow, but also China, Iran, and North Korea.”
