As Johnson said, such a step is necessary to quickly receive assistance to Israel in its fight against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. He noted that now the United States does not have time to consider a package combining assistance to Ukraine and Israel.
“This proposal will soon be announced by the Senate after lengthy negotiations,” Johnson said.
The bill that will be voted on provides funds for Israel’s Iron Dome and Iron Beam missile defense systems. As well as US military operations in the Middle East and enhanced protection of US personnel in embassies.
“While the Senate appears poised to finally release the text of its supplemental package after months of closed-door negotiations, their leadership is aware that by not including the House in their negotiations, they have scuttled the ability to move quickly on any legislation,” Johnson warned.
It will not have offsetting spending cuts, unlike the $14 billion Israel aid bill that passed the House over Democratic Party opposition.
Delays in funding aid to Ukraine
US President Joe Biden has proposed that Congress allocate $106 billion in aid to Ukraine and Israel. But so far the issue has not been accepted.
There is debate in the US Congress about further funding for assistance to Ukraine. The issues are being blocked by Republicans, who demand immigration legislation.
In early January, the White House announced that aid to Ukraine was being suspended pending Congressional approval of new funding.
According to The Wall Street Journal, US President Joe Biden agreed to strengthen immigration policy, as Republicans demanded in order to avoid criticism and provide aid to Ukraine.
At the same time, The Guardian reports that the US Congress is one step away from concluding an agreement to resume aid for Ukraine.
