As oil markets remain jittery, the cargo seizure is the latest escalation between Washington and Tehran after years of US sanctions pressure over Iran’s nuclear program. Iran does not recognize the sanctions, and its oil exports have increased.
Tehran says its nuclear program is for civilian purposes while Washington suspects it wants to develop a nuclear bomb.
Maritime security firm Ambrey said the US seizure occurred at least five days before Iran’s action last Thursday.
“Ambrey has assessed the seizure by the Iranian Navy as a response to US actions,” he said in a report to clients.
“Both tankers are of Suezmax size. Iran previously retaliated after seizing the oil cargo,” the report continued. ReutersSunday (30/4/2023).
The source familiar with the matter, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter, said Washington took possession of the oil cargo aboard the Marshall Islands tanker Suez Rajan after obtaining a previous court order.
According to ship tracking data, the tanker’s last reported position was near southern Africa on April 22.
