The United States is facing a new and significant outbreak of COVID-19. The country’s chief epidemiologist, Anthony Fauci, said the disease could spread rapidly with 100,000 new infections a day, the British broadcaster told the BBC.

On Tuesday, June 30, the number of new confirmed infections was more than 40,000, and this number was registered for the fourth time in five days. Fauci, the chief epidemiologist in the United States, said Florida, Arizona, Texas and California are currently the hardest hit.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we climbed to 100,000 [jaunu infekcijas gadījumu] day,”

the epidemiologist said Tuesday after being questioned in the U.S. Senate. He pointed out that too few Americans wear respiratory masks and observe social distancing.

The worst outbreak in the southern and western United States has prompted 16 states to postpone or abandon COVID-19 restrictions. For example, Andrew Cuomo, the governor of the state of New York, has ruled that people entering the state from 16 other US states must spend 14 days in solitary confinement, the BBC reports.
