US seeks to guard web site visitors from Chinese language intervention

Washington. The Federal Communications Fee (FCC) voted Thursday to advance a proposal to strengthen the safety of data transmitted over the Web after authorities companies stated a Chinese language operator had diverted site visitors.

Since 2022, the USA telecommunications regulatory physique has been learning vulnerabilities that it claims threaten the safety and integrity of the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), a central aspect of the worldwide data routing system on the Web.

The proposal would require broadband suppliers to create BGP safety plans and report on progress in danger mitigation.

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel stated Thursday that U.S. companies had not too long ago revealed that China Telecom used BGP vulnerabilities “to divert Web site visitors from the USA on at the least six events.”

He added: “These ‘BGP hijacks’ can expose private data, allow theft, extortion and state-level espionage.”
