US Secretary of State Discusses Sudan and Yemen with Saudi Counterpart

US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, discussed issues, including Sudan and Yemen, in contact with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, according to US Secretary of State spokesman Matthew Miller.

Miller said in statement Blinken thanked Saudi Arabia for bringing together more than 40 countries in Jeddah earlier this month to discuss principles for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

Miller indicated that the two ministers decided to continue working together to end the devastating conflict in Sudan.

According to the US State Department spokesperson, the two ministers committed to “redoubling efforts to secure lasting peace in Yemen through a UN-mediated Yemeni-Yemeni peace process.”

The call comes in light of a series of recent visits by US officials to Saudi Arabia, indicating a return of warmth to relations between Riyadh and Washington.

Less than a year after Washington issued a warning to Riyadh of unspecified “consequences” over a dispute over oil supplies, US President Joe Biden dispatched his top advisers to hold meetings with the Saudi royal family.

The issues that have strained decades-old US-Saudi relations are well known, most notably the human rights file and Saudi concerns about Washington’s credibility as a security partner.
