US Secretary of State calls for refraining from militarization of the Arctic / Article

United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has called for the militarization of the Arctic to be avoided. The statement was made in the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, on the eve of the Arctic Council meeting.

Blinken told a news conference that Washington was concerned about some of the increased military activity. This increases the chances of accidents and undermines the common goal of a peaceful and sustainable future for the region.

The official also pointed out, in his opinion, Russia’s illegal claims against foreign ships using the North Sea route. The regulation proposed by Moscow does not take due account of international law, including freedom of navigation in territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is scheduled to have a separate meeting with Blinken during the Arctic Council, warned Western countries on Monday. not to claim the Arctic. Russia is also responsible for ensuring security on the Arctic coast.

CONTEXT:

Several NATO members are watching with concern Russia’s efforts to strengthen its military presence in the Arctic-rich Arctic region. Russia, in turn, held ambitious military maneuvers in the Arctic.
