“US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken discusses peace talks with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev”

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had a phone call with President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on Sunday, April 30.

During the phone conversation, Antony Blinken underlined the importance of peace talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan and indicated that the US will continue its support in this direction. The US Secretary of State said he was satisfied that peace would be achieved. The US chief diplomat also addressed the establishment of a checkpoint on the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

For his part, President Ilham Aliyev said that Azerbaijan supports the peace agenda and has initiated negotiations on a peace treaty and normalization of relations with Armenia. In this regard, the Azerbaijani side proposed five principles to Armenia, which correspond to the norms and principles of international law.

Regarding the establishment of the “Lachin” checkpoint on the Azerbaijan-Armenia border, President Ilham Aliyev said that this checkpoint was established in accordance with the sovereign rights of Azerbaijan and all international rules.

The Azerbaijani President stressed that the goal is to ensure control and not restrict traffic, since passage through the checkpoint is already guaranteed.

In the phone call, the Azerbaijani leader noted that the rights of the Armenian population living in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan are guaranteed in accordance with the Constitution of Azerbaijan and international documents to which the country is a party.
