US Secretary of State Affirms Support for Israel’s Right to Prevent Terrorist Attacks

A statement by US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that Blinken met with Netanyahu and the Israeli war government in Tel Aviv, during the minister’s fourth tour in the Middle East, since the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas.

Blinken and Netanyahu discussed “ongoing efforts to ensure the release of all remaining hostages and the importance of increasing the level of humanitarian aid reaching civilians in Gaza,” according to Miller.

Miller explained that Blinken welcomed the appointment of Sigrid Kaag to the position of Chief United Nations Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Gaza and pledged close cooperation with her.

Blinken reiterated the need to ensure lasting and sustainable peace for Israel and the region, including through the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Blinken discussed the same issues with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, and emphasized the same points, as the two sides discussed “efforts to achieve broader regional integration that guarantees Israel’s security and promotes the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.”

During his meeting with the Israeli Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, the minister stressed the need to prevent the expansion of the conflict and strive to achieve sustainable peace in the region.
