US intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia is likely to retaliate with severe retaliation against the United States and its NATO partners if they agree to give Ukraine the “green light” to use Western long-range missiles for strikes deep inside in Russia.
That’s what Western officials claimed, according to a report in the New York Times, adding that intelligence services are also downplaying the effect the use of these missiles will have on the course of the conflict, as the Ukrainians currently have a limited number of weapons and it is unclear how many more the western allies could provide them.
The assessment highlights the potential risk of a high-stakes decision that currently rests with US President Joe Biden, who met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Thursday 9/26. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity , said it remains unclear what Biden will decide to do.
Intelligence agencies outlined a range of possible Russian responses, from acts of sabotage at various facilities in Europe to potentially lethal attacks on US and European military bases. Evaluating the benefit-risk balance, the US agencies come to the conclusion that meeting Zelensky’s request is a high-risk move, with great risk and uncertain benefit.
For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned the United States and its partners that it would be a “red line” for Moscow if they allow Ukraine to strike deeper into Russian territory with Western weapons.
A White House spokesman did not respond to a request for comment on the Secret Service assessment. A spokesman for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment.
