US scientists call the size of the human brain shrinking, what is the sign?

THE ANGELS – Writer and brain scientist from the Los Angeles Natural History Museum JM Stibel said that the size of the human brain has greatly diminished in the last 50,000 years. The results of research written in the journal Brain, Behavior and Evolution, JM Stibel reveal the fact that brain size has been reduced by more than 5 percent in modern homosapiens.

JM Stibel also found evidence that brain size relative to the body – known as encephalization – has also decreased, mainly due to obesity. Environmental factors, such as health, education, and technology, may contribute to brain size shrinkage.

JM Stibel also points to significant declines in IQ over the past 30 years in many parts of the world, with the largest declines occurring in industrialized countries. That means that environmental factors, may not help increase or maintain intelligence levels in the long term.

It should be noted, JM Stibel here only uses IQ as a measure of intelligence. This benchmark is considered not to represent a comprehensive measure of intelligence, although it is still widely accepted as a standard measure of cognitive function scores. For this reason, JM Stibel noted in his research that the general measure of intelligence in the last century has increased. And, it is comparable to the achievement of the current level of public education. So this study has not explained the significant impact of shrinking the size of the human brain.

Dr. Jeremy DeSilva of Dartmouth College and Dr. James Traniello of Boston University have also disclosed about shrinking the size of the human brain. The problem of shrinking the size of the human brain is presented in a paper published by Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, which was quoted on the scitechdaily page in October 2021.

“The surprising fact about humans today is that our brains are smaller than those of our Pleistocene ancestors. Why our brains shrink is a great mystery to anthropologists,” explains Dr Jeremy DeSilva. (Read also; Scientists Prove the Existence of Early Human Hybrids from 50,000 Years Ago )

The Pleistocene is a period in the geological time scale that lasted between 2,588,000 and 11,500 years ago. To unravel this mystery, a team of researchers from various academic fields set out to study patterns in the evolutionary history of the human brain.

The researchers applied point of change analysis to a dataset of 985 modern human fossils and skulls. They found that the size of the human brain increased 2.1 million years ago and 1.5 million years ago or during the Pleistocene.

However, its size began to decrease about 3,000 years ago during the Holocene. The Holocene period marked the end of the glacial period, which was about 11.7 thousand years ago.

At that time, the sea surface rose and flooded the Sundanese and Sahul views. The Indonesian Archipelago emerged in its current form. “Understanding why the brain increases or decreases is difficult to learn if only by using fossils,” explained Traniello.
