The United States reiterated on Tuesday that it was ready to supply COVID-19 vaccines to China amid an unprecedented surge in cases threatening seniors in that country.
Speaking at a daily press conference, State Department spokesman Ned Price recalled that the United States has millions of doses of vaccines and is ready to send some if Beijing so wishes.
The United States is the largest donor of COVID-19 vaccines worldwide. We are ready to continue helping people around the world, including China, with these vaccines or other COVID support.
he said.
It is in the interest of the international community that we can collectively help China maintain [l’épidémie] under control
He added.
Since 2020, China has been imposing strict health restrictions, in the name of a so-called policy covid-zero
which made it possible to protect the people most at risk, generally poorly vaccinated.
The government unexpectedly halted most of these measures in early December amid growing anger among the population and a major impact on the economy.
Since then the number of cases has exploded. The scale of the epidemic is impossible
to be determined, by admission of the same authorities, the screening tests being no longer mandatory and the data fragmented.
