WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States on Thursday unveiled a new set of sanctions against the Burmese military to punish it for the coup it carried out on February 1, placing the ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as the main conglomerate linked to the junta.
Washington has also introduced controls on exports making it more difficult for US manufacturers to obtain licenses to ship certain products – a measure intended to prevent them from being used by the military.
The move comes in response to the increasingly bloody crackdown by Burmese security forces to stem daily protests across the country.
The US Department of Commerce said in a statement that it was examining possible additional measures.
