“I am announcing the first tranche of sanctions to put the cost on Russia in response to their actions yesterday,” Biden said. “These sanctions have been closely negotiated with our allies and partners, and we will continue to tighten sanctions if Russia intensifies its invasion.”

The President of the United States listed the imposed sanctions.

“We are introducing a complete blockade of two large Russian financial institutions: VEB and their military bank (apparently, we are talking about Promsvyazbank – ed.),” he said.

“We are imposing comprehensive sanctions on Russian sovereign debt. This means that we have cut off the Russian government from Western funding. It can no longer raise money in the West and cannot trade its new debt in our or European markets,” the US president continued.

Biden went on to talk about sanctions against family members of the Russian elite.

“We will also impose sanctions on the Russian elite and their families. They share the corrupt benefits of the Kremlin’s policies and should also suffer,” the US president said.

Biden also announced the blocking of Nord Stream 2 and the possibility of additional sanctions.
