“We estimate today that he is close to 100% of all the forces we expected him to move there. He is damn close to 100%,” a US official told reporters who wanted to remain anonymous.
Of the more than 150,000 Russian troops stationed on Ukraine’s borders, 80% are on standby, deployed in an attack a few kilometers from the border.
“He is as ready as he can be,” the official said. “Whether he actually does it or not really depends on Putin. They can now start every hour.”
Although US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that the attack was “beginning”, administration officials said they had no evidence that Russian forces had crossed the border with Ukraine.
“We cannot yet confirm that the Russian armed forces have entered the Donbass areas,” the defense official said.
