US, Russia and China Discuss the Future of Afghanistan

Talks between delegations from the USA, Russia and China took place in the Pakistani capital Islamabad. The reason was the future of Afghanistan, where the humanitarian crisis is deepening.

After the meeting, a joint statement was issued calling on the international community to urgently provide humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people. The parties also call on the Taliban to form a representative government that respects the rights of all Afghans and ensures equal rights for women and girls. The sides welcomed the Taliban’s intention to secure airspace over the country, the statement said. The negotiators condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Afghanistan and called on the Taliban to “cut off all ties with international terrorist groups.”

The foreign minister of the Taliban-proclaimed government, Amir Khan Mutaki, was also present in Islamabad, but did not attend the talks officially because the international community does not recognize the legitimacy of his government. The next meeting will take place in Beijing, where Taliban representatives have also been invited.

The Islamabad meeting took place several weeks after preliminary negotiations, in which the United States did not participate. In India, negotiations were also held on the future of Afghanistan, which were attended by representatives of the defense departments of Russia, Iran and five Central Asian countries. China and Pakistan, which have a difficult relationship, boycotted the meeting.
