US Retaliatory Strikes in Iraq: Response to Hezbollah Drone Attack

Dec 26, 2023 at 6:32 AM Update: 38 minutes ago

US forces carried out retaliatory strikes in Iraq on Monday. The attacks are a response to a drone attack by Hezbollah, among others, that injured three soldiers.

The attacks are being carried out at three locations used by groups in Iraq that are backed by Iran, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said. A security service employee was killed in the attacks. About twenty people were injured.

The attack is a response to previous attacks in which one of the soldiers was seriously injured. The condition of the other soldiers is unknown. After the attack, President Joe Biden ordered retaliatory strikes.

U.S. forces carried out “necessary and proportionate strikes” against facilities used by, among others, the Iraqi branch of Hezbollah, Austin said in a statement.

“The precision strikes are in response to a series of attacks against US personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militias.”

The United States has thousands of troops stationed in Iraq. Since the war in Gaza, they have carried out more frequent attacks on Iranian targets, because the US suspects the country of organizing and facilitating attacks on American targets.

The Iraqi government has condemned the attacks as a “hostile action” and said that Iraq’s sovereignty had been violated.
