Washington DC –
Government United States of America (The US) emphasized that it does not support a new, long-term occupation of Gaza Strip by Israel. Washington declares that the Gaza Strip is land Palestineso that the Palestinian people have the right to determine the future of the region.
As reported AFP and Al ArabiyaWednesday (8/11/2023), the US statement was in response to the Prime Minister’s (PM) statement Benjamin Netanyahu who said his country would bear ‘overall responsibility’ for the security of the Gaza Strip for an indefinite period, after the war against Hamas end.
Netanyahu’s statement, according to Al Arabiya and Al Jazeerahinting that Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian enclave will continue.
“Our view is that the Palestinian people must be at the forefront of this decision and Gaza is Palestinian land and will remain Palestinian land,” US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told local journalists.
“In general, we do not support the re-occupation of Gaza and neither does Israel,” he stressed.
Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005. The Palestinian enclave was previously captured by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War. After withdrawing from Gaza, Israel imposed a blockade after Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip.
However, Patel said the US agreed that there was ‘no return to the status quo of October 6′, referring to the day before Hamas’ surprise attack on southern Israel.
“It is important to note that at the same time we agreed with Israel that there is no return to the October 6 status quo,” he said.
