MadridThe US military announced that it had rescued two Iranian civilian sailors “in distress” in international waters a week ago, after which they were transported to the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt where they received medical attention and were provided with food and water.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the rescue took place last Friday at around 7:00 a.m. (local time). An inflatable boat from the missile destroyer ‘USS Daniel Inouye’ and a helicopter from the ‘USS Theodore Roosevelt’ rescued the sailors from the water, it said in a statement posted on its website.
“Our Navy Sailors and crew responded quickly and professionally, demonstrating their world-class training. Assisting Sailors in distress is a mission our strike group will always be ready to support. It’s the right thing to do and demonstrates once again that the U.S. Navy is a ready force when needed,” said Rear Admiral Christopher Alexander.
Currently, in the context of tensions in the Middle East, two US aircraft carriers (USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS Abraham Lincoln) are present in the region. The first of them is carrying out routine operations in the CENTCOM area of operations.
