(Reuters) – The US Republicans are restricting attendance at their nomination party conference for President Donald Trump in Florida.
The US state has recently seen significantly more coronavirus cases. “Adjustments need to be made” to meet local guidelines, said a letter from the party’s National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel on Thursday. According to an insider, only the 2500 or so delegates themselves are allowed to attend three of the four evenings in August. On the last evening, on which Trump is to be formally nominated, up to 7,000 people should come. Significantly more supporters usually appear at party congresses.
The election party was originally supposed to take place in Charlotte, North Carolina. However, Governor Roy Cooper had declined to weaken health requirements. The Republicans then moved most of the August 24-27 event to Jacksonville, Florida. It is still unclear where exactly Trump will give his nomination speech. Florida announced 156 more deaths from the coronavirus on Thursday, a record. The number of new infections rose by 13,965, the second largest increase since the beginning of the pandemic. The state with around 21.5 million inhabitants has a total of 315,775 infections – more than Germany – and 4782 deaths.
