High-ranking senators of the US Republican Party, who have been sympathetic to President Donald Trump’s allegations of fraudulent elections, accepted the results of the electoral group vote and recognized Joe Biden-elect.
According to the Financial Times (FT), on the 14th (local time) in the elections held by 51 constituencies including 50 states and the capital, Washington, DC, candidate Biden’s Democratic Party won by securing a majority among a total of 538 electors.
That evening, several Republican senators told reporters at the Capitol that it was time to accept Biden as the 46th president of the United States on 20 January.
Congressman John Coron (Texas) said, “We will see the pages of history turn over. We will see a peaceful handover.”
Ohio Senator Rob Portman said, “I think we should respect the process of the founding fathers and respect the will of the voters.” Iowa Congressman Chuck Grasley also admitted Biden’s election.
Rep. Lindsey Graham (South Carolina), one of Trump’s most loyal supporters, replied “yes” when asked if the Democratic candidate Biden was elected.
He said he had a pleasant 10-minute phone call with the new Biden-elect in recent weeks and said he was supporting the nominees he proposed.
In the US presidential election, electoral votes are more of a banal act, but President Trump attracted attention by arguing that “a fraudulent act such as manipulation of mail voting and counting invalid votes was committed.” President Trump and his staff tried to overturn the election results by encouraging the electoral team to ignore the November 3 vote and cast a vote on President Trump.
However, the attempt went unaffected, and Republican lawmakers are saying goodbye to President Trump, FT said.
