WASHINGTON (Reuters) – US Representative Rashida Tlaib, the first American woman of Palestinian origin in Congress, accused President Joe Biden of supporting “genocide” of Palestinians, warning of the repercussions of this in next year’s elections.
Tlaib, the Democratic representative from Michigan, renewed her calls for Biden to support a ceasefire in the conflict that has been going on for nearly a month between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). This came in a video recording she posted on the social media platform X late on Friday evening.
Tlaib said during the recording, which showed pictures of the dead and wounded from the bombing in Gaza, pro-Palestinian demonstrations across the United States, Biden’s declaration of support for Israel, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s thanks to the US president, that “Joe Biden supported the genocide of the Palestinian people.”
White House spokesmen have not yet responded to a request for comment on her statements.
After Israel said that Hamas militants killed 1,400 people and kidnapped more than 240 in a surprise attack on October 7, the Israeli army launched an air, artillery and ground attack on the Hamas-run Gaza Strip. Palestinian authorities say the attack has claimed more than 9,400 lives so far.
The Gaza Strip is witnessing a scarcity of foodstuffs, and its residents resort to drinking salt water, while medical services there collapse.
Washington maintains strong military and political support for Israel while calling on its ally to take steps to avoid civilian deaths and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Tlaib said, “The American people will not forget. Biden, support the ceasefire now or don’t depend on us in 2024… Mr. President, the American people are not with you on this matter. We will remember that in 2024.”
