The US regulator has ordered new york airports to slow down air traffic, the smoke coming from the fires in Canada reducing too much visibility.
As smoke from Canadian wildfires has poured over the east coast and central United States for two days, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced on June 7, 2023 to have “ slow down traffic to and from New York area airports due to reduced visibility.” The regulator specified in its press release that it “will adjust the volume of traffic to take account of rapidly changing conditions”. The airports of New York-LaGuardia et Newark-Liberty were the most affected on Wednesday, with for the first of retards announced an average of 82 minutes and for the second of 119 minutes at midday according to the FAA.
According to Flightaware, nearly 18,500 flights were posted late yesterday at US airports, including nearly 500 departing and arriving at LaGuardia (38% of the total) and more than 400 at Newark (31% of the total). The number of flight cancellations, on the other hand, did not exceed forty in each platform, without it being possible to determine the causes. The airport of New York-JFK was much better off yesterday according to the same source, with around 200 flights delayed (affecting 15% of the day’s schedule) including rotations d’Air France et Delta Air Lines to Paris.
On the airline side, the Americans most affected by the delays yesterday were Republic Airways et Frontier Airlines.

Check out this almost unbelievable time-lapse of wildfire smoke consuming the World Trade Center and the New York City skyline.
Those vulnerable to poor air quality, including seniors and young children, should limit time outdoors if possible.
