US referendums call for significant changes in drug laws – Abroad – News

Referendums on the legalization of marijuana took place in five US states on Tuesday.

Residents of Arizona, Montana, New Jersey and South Dakota supported the legalization of marijuana for entertainment in referendums.

The legalization of marijuana for medical purposes was also supported in Mississippi and South Dakota.

Thus, South Dakota has become the first US state to simultaneously support the legalization of marijuana for both medical and recreational purposes, reports the US broadcaster CNN.

It will take at least a year for the legalization approved in the referendums to take effect in these states.

Recreational marijuana use has been legalized in 11 states – Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.

With changes in the law in Arizona, Montana, New Jersey and South Dakota, marijuana for entertainment will be legal in a total of 15 states, as well as in the District of Columbia.

In turn, the use of marijuana for medical purposes will be legal in a total of 35 states.

Ten years ago, marijuana use was illegal in all US states. The situation began to change in 2012, when Washington and Colorado state referendums supported the use of marijuana for production purposes.

Although marijuana use is still illegal at the national level in the United States, one in three U.S. citizens will soon be able to legally purchase marijuana.

Referendums on changes to drug laws also took place on Tuesday in the U.S. capital, Washington and Oregon.

Washington people supported the decriminalization of psychedelic plants and mushrooms in a referendum.

In Oregon, meanwhile, the decriminalization of all drugs was supported, including heroin, heroin and methamphetamine.

In turn, psychoactive mushrooms will be legalized in Oregon for medical use.

Oregon has one of the highest rates of drug use in the United States. The state intends to address this issue by focusing more on this issue than on the issue of health.

By decriminalizing drugs, Oregon hopes to reduce deaths from drug overdoses, as well as the number of people convicted of drug parity. Instead, the state plans to focus on rehabilitating drug users.
