US President Joe Biden announced an embargo on oil imports from Russia as a new response to the invasion of Ukraine. After days of pressure from a group of bipartisan congressmen, President Biden announced the ban on imports of Russian oil, natural gas and coal, as part of a new measure of pressure on the government of Vladimir Putin.
The president announced that the objective of this measure is to “attack the main artery of the Russian economy”, however, he clarified that the sanction would mean an increase in the price of crude oil and, consequently, of gasoline.
“Today’s decision comes at a cost here at home. Putin’s war is already hurting American families at the gas pump. I’m going to do everything I can to minimize price gouging,” Biden said.
With this embargo, Biden claimed that Ukraine will never be a victory for Putin. He said that “you can take a city, but you can never take a country.” He also assured that the Americans have demonstrated to support the people of Ukraine and said that “we will not be part of subsidizing Putin’s war.”
The ban on energy imports from Russia, one of the largest producers in the world, will be only by the United States, without the participation of its European allies, who depend on Russian oil and import about 27% according to official data.
