US presidential election 2024: Voting begins in several states as poll results converge between Trump and Harris – BBC News Arabic

Americans go to the polls today to choose the next president of the country. Because the person who sits in the Oval Office of the White House has a great influence on the lives of people inside and outside of the United States, this election gets attention and everyone following its results.

As is known, there are only two parties in control of the political system in the United States, and every American president in the present day belongs to one of them.

The Democratic Party is a liberal political party, whose agenda is largely defined by a push for civil rights, a broad social safety net, and measures to address climate change.

This is the party of the official candidate of the Democrats, Kamala Harris, after the President Joe Biden announced that he withdrew from the presidential race last July.

The Republican Party is the conservative political party in the United States. Also known as the Grand Old Party, its most prominent long-standing calls include lowering taxes, reducing the size of government, the right to own guns, and tightening restrictions on immigration and abortion.

How are US presidential elections conducted?

The two winning candidates from each party compete for each state’s electoral votes to win the national Electoral College.

Each state has a certain number of Electoral College votes based in part on its population, and those votes total 538, so the winner is the candidate who wins 270 or more votes.

This means that voters decide elections at the state level rather than national elections, which is why it is possible for a candidate to win the most votes nationally – as Hillary did Clinton in 2016 – but without winning the Electoral College, thus defeating him. in the election.

All but one state has a winner-take-all rule, so whichever candidate wins the most gets the state’s votes.

Most states lean heavily toward one party or another, and each party usually focuses on a dozen or so states to win. This is called the Battle States.

Who else will be chosen?

All attention will be on who wins the presidency, but voters will also choose members of Congress – the legislative body of government – when they go to the polls.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives will be contested, and only 33 Senate seats are up for grabs in the elections.

Republicans control the House of Representatives while Democrats control the Senate.

Both chambers are responsible for submitting and voting on legislation, and both chambers can be considered the weight of the White House’s plans if the controlling party in each chamber agrees with the president.
