US President Joe Biden’s Plan to Restore Military Ties with China

US President Joe Biden wants to restore military ties with China, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said.

Source: Sullivan in an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation,” reports Reuters

Direct speech: “The President is committed to restoring military-to-military ties because he believes it is in the national security interest of the United States. We need these lines of communication to ensure there are no mistakes, miscalculations or misunderstandings.”

Details: Sullivan noted that restoring military ties can happen at all levels – from the senior leadership to the tactical operational level, as well as “on the water and in the air in the Indo-Pacific region.”

Sullivan said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Biden would try to “move the ball” on military ties during his meeting with Xi Jinping, but declined to provide further details.

“The Chinese have basically severed those communications links. President Biden would like to restore them,” Sullivan said, adding that “that’s the top item on the agenda.”

Biden in person for the first time in a year will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco. This will be only the second face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since Biden took office in January 2021.

The Biden-Xi meeting is expected to discuss global issues ranging from the war between Israel and Hamas to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, North Korea’s ties to Russia, Taiwan, the Indo-Pacific, human rights, fentanyl production, artificial intelligence, and ” fair trade and economic relations, a senior US official said.

What preceded: Earlier, the Financial Times reported that US President Joe Biden will speak at talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in San Francisco on November 15 on the need to restore communication channels between the armed forces both countries.
