Biden’s direct speech: “At the UN General Assembly earlier this week, I made it clear that no nation in the world can be truly secure unless we stand up for Ukraine’s freedom in the face of Russian brutality and aggression. That’s why we have assembled a coalition of more than 50 countries – 50 countries to help Ukraine defend itself. This is critical.”
Details: Biden noted that the United States has begun the process of “formalizing our long-term commitment to Ukraine’s security” along with other G7 leaders and other international partners, and that is why it supports “a just and lasting peace that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and its territorial integrity.”
The US President also praised the “tremendous courage” of the people of Ukraine.
“It has inspired the world, truly inspired the world with a resolve to defend these principles, and together with our partners and allies, the American people are determined to do whatever it takes to keep the world with you,” Biden said.
Background:
Biden is expected to announce more than $325 million in new military aid during his meeting with Zelensky. It will include more cluster munitions, two US officials said. The publication notes that this is the second time the United States has provided Kyiv with “controversial weapons.” Earlier, the Ukrainian president visited Capitol Hill; he described his meeting with American senators as a “wonderful dialogue.” Zelensky also met with lawmakers from the US House of Representatives.
